Enterprise Investors acquires 32.4% of shares in Tahe Outdoors
14 March 2014
Enterprise Venture Fund I (EVF), the venture capital fund managed by Enterprise Investors (EI), has purchased 32.4% of shares in Tahe Outdoors, the leading European watersports company. The total value of the transaction was EUR 3.4 million.
Tahe Outdoors is a top manufacturing and distribution company in the field of high quality watersports equipment in Europe, with 25 years of experience. It offers a full range of kayaks, canoes, paddles and related accessories under five brands: Tahe Marine, Egalis, Zegul, Trapper and Beluga. The company has two factories in Estonia and one in France, and currently employs 90 people. Tahe Outdoors’ sales network covers more than 35 countries worldwide, including markets as exotic as Chile, Venezuela, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Papua New Guinea and Martinique.
“The company is a growing and profitable business that is systematically gaining market share. It is already the biggest kayak supplier in Scandinavia – Europe’s most demanding market,” said Alek Wasiukiewicz, Vice President at Enterprise Investors in charge of the investment. “Tahe’s modern production facility is one of the company’s many competitive advantages. Moreover, its production and transport cost structure as well as shorter delivery times give Tahe an advantage on the European market over Asian and American producers.”
“This partnership will safeguard the company’s strategy to become the European leader in watersports equipment,” commented Janek Pohla, President of Tahe Outdoors. “It confirms the quality of our value proposition, which we have built by developing our brands and modernizing our value chain. We will continue to introduce the industry’s newest materials and cutting-edge technologies.”
Enterprise Investors is one of the largest private equity and venture capital firms in Central and Eastern Europe. Active since 1990, the firm has raised eight funds with total capital exceeding EUR 2 billion. As part of their ongoing expansion strategy Tahe Outdoors is pleased to announce a new distribution system in the UK.
Justin Snell and Andrew Dron will handle distribution of all the Tahe Outdoors products and ranges from two warehouses serving the North and the South of the UK. The area will be divided along county boundaries in a wavy line between Bristol and The Wash with Andrew handling the South and South West including the Channel Islands, Justin all parts North plus Wales and Scotland.
Both names will be instantly recognizable to the UK retailer network through their various previous roles within the industry. The provision of two warehouses carrying extensive inventories of the Tahe Outdoors ranges is intended to make delivery or collection a convenient and speedy operation and reactivity from the Tahe Outdoors factories in Europe will aid the early supply of anything not held within the facilities.
Tahe Outdoors have been building kayaks and canoes in Estonia for 25 years and are the biggest supplier of kayaks in Northern Europe. Recently they acquired Egalis in Cognac, France - the biggest manufacturer of paddles in Europe and Arrow kayaks from Denmark to add to an already comprehensive array of kayaks, canoes & paddles. There are plans for 16 new models this year and a full range of sit-on-tops will complement the already extensive kayak ranges. To ensure a warm, dry and safe experience the value-for-money Beluga range of watersports apparel made in their own Tartu factory and developed to cope with an extended Northern European season will also be available through the UK distribution.
Tahe Outdoors buys Europe’s biggest paddle manufacturer Egalis
17 September 2013
The Estonian-owned manufacturer of water sports equipment Tahe Outdoors has bought Europe’s biggest producer of paddles, Egalis. The purchase of the French factory makes the company the biggest manufacturer of water sports equipment in Europe. The transaction was financed in part through a secured investment loan from KredEx.
Janek Pohla, one of the owners of Tahe Outdoors, says that the purchase of the French factory fulfils one of the long-term goals of the company, which is to establish a separate production and logistics centre close to its customer base in Central Europe so as to better serve clients. “The 4000 m2 of contemporary production space and technology at the factory will make our operations more innovative and significantly more efficient, especially in terms of the British, German and French markets,” he explained.
In addition to the favourable logistical location of the factory, the company is now able to offer water sports enthusiasts an ‘all-in-one’ service. “Whereas before we’ve only been involved in the production of kayaks, canoes and water sports clothing, now our clients will be able to get the right kind of paddles from us as well,” said Pohla.
Tahe Outdoors is the market leader in canoes, kayaks and accessories in Scandinavia. The purchase of the Egalis factory now makes it the biggest manufacturer of paddles in Europe and the biggest manufacturer of water sports equipment generally in the region.
Previously known as Tahe Kayaks, Tahe Outdoors is Europe’s biggest manufacturer of premium-class water sports equipment. It was founded in 1989 by two professional paddlers, with its first Tahe Marine kayak being constructed in cooperation with the Finnish Canoeing and Rowing Federation. Brothers Marek and Janek Pohla bought Tahe Kayak in 2007 and, through product innovation, have since expanded the company by more than 600%.
Today, Tahe Outdoors develops eight international brands: Tahe Marine, Zegul, Trapper, Beluga, Riot, Boreal Design and Seaward. It owns three factories and employs 90 people. Its products are represented in 35 countries. The company’s water sports equipment has been recognised and awarded around the world.
Egalis is a renowned French brand which has been connected to the field of water sports for more than 50 years. It is currently the European market leader in paddles. Founded in 1962, it began producing and marketing wooden paddles before making the transition to plastic and aluminium production in the 1980s. Today its range of paddles has become the most popular in Europe.
